RACV Club. If you travel to Melbourne regularly the RACV Club is a great deal. Room rate includes breakfast and valet parking and being a member reduces the rate to about A$195 a day. Check it out at http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/RACV+club+&+resorts/

    The Novotel on Collins St.

Fairly bland but comfortable, and in an absolutely excellent location (between Swanston and Elizabeth).

Second the nunnery recommendation, especially the guesthouse which is a good alternative to a hotel. in a location that's close to the inner city suburb of Fitzroy (an area good for cafes, vintage clothings, records and books, live music and awesome pubs and bars).

Better than the Park Hyatt, which badly needs renovations. Cafe in foyer is okay if you want to eat in the hotel.

As far as backpackers go, this place is pretty great. Very quirky vibe and located right in the heart of Fitzroy.
