The best local market is Bur Dubai Suq. For gold: the gold Suq in Deira. For local food in a shopping mall, try Wafi Gourmet at the Wafi.

"Local Market" in Dubai is the malls. You can also try some of the old souks like Mina Bazar, Morshed, the Spice Market, and Nayef.

If you are staying in Jumeirah or sheikh Zayed road as most people do - best to buy gold in Gold & Diamond Park, near Mall of the Emirates (it's behind some big stores, behind Sheikh Zayed road). Any taxi driver would know it. Shortish walk if you fancied it from Mall of the Emirates. Very clean, light, spacious, far less hassle than the gold souk.

Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall are my favorites to shop in Dubai. Especially Dubai Mall, since it has Kenokuniya Bookstore.
